year of manufacture Archived Message

Guys, we need to be aware of how difficult it is to determine year of manufacture from the information on our website. As Russ often said (God rest his soul), it takes a Philadelphia lawyer to properly interpret Smith serial numbers, and most people who inquire about when their Smith was made don't furnish the necessary information for us to make a "set in stone" determination. Therefore, I humbly offer the following guidelines: 1) All stampings on the top of the right barrel, or the engraving on the rib; 2) whether ejectors or extractors-- very important; 3) ALL stampings on the watertable- serial number INCLUDING prefix, i.e. R, FW,etc, plus the grade stamp,i.e. Field, I, S, etc.-- very important; 4) gauge; 5) hammer or hammerless. Hopefully, this information will help us avoid mis-dating a gun.
