Posted by Bob Haworth The 8-string didn't make it into Martin's main production line and as far as I know only a few were made. My friend, Phil Collins (not the drummer) had a Denver guitar maker build him one and then he subsequently found a Martin 8-string which he now owns. I'll see if I can get him to write something here as he really knows more about that subject than I do.

The 8-string tenor was an experiment that Nick tried for awhile. It didn't last long, probably for two reasons. It was twice as hard to tune and it was really quite a different sound than the 4-string (compare a 12-string guitar to a 6-string and you have a similar contrast.)
