8 string tenor guy

One more tenor question ( I just watched the KT doc. 'Wherever We May Go ') I noticed Nick playing an 8 string tenor in the mid 60's. Was it a Martin? Was it only for certain songs ? Did he bring it back during his second tenure ? Do you own one ? Well, maybe more than one question. I must admit I don't ever remeber seeing one of those in any stores ever ( I might be going to the wrong stores ). Could it be a Pete Seeger model long-neck Mandolin ( just kidding ). I have more questions and observations about that documentary but I don't want to dominate the message board, so I'll save them.
