The whole issue of Fantasy Camp is very interesting in itself. According to George Grove, he proposed the KT Fantasy Camp concept to Bob Shane several years before John started his, but Bob nixed the idea. When John announced FC-I, he originally promoted it as "The Kingston Trio Fantasy Camp." Bob immediately put a stop to that, since he owns the name, "The Kingston Trio." So John had to change the name to "Trio Fantasy Camp." I had the impression that Bob kinda hoped it would fail. But over the years it's become a financial success for John. And in an odd turn-around, since Bob's retirement, he has become somewhat active in the event, first just attending and in the past couple of years, actually performing with Nick and John, to the delight of loyal KT fans. It truly has become an annual KT tribute, of sorts, with campers and on-lookers coming from all over. And you can attend the concerts ($10?) without having to pony up the big bucks to be an official camper (although that does allow you an official FC shirt, special one-on-one time with Nick and John and the opportunity to be the third member of their Trio for one song. Thus the Fantasy.
Your comment about no acknowledgement of the current Trio at Fantasy camp is true. Remember, the continuation of The KT is Bob Shane's deal. Fantasy Camp is about reliving the past and hanging out with the guys who were part of it.
Also, the reason that Nick didn't make an appearance at the WFMA Tribute was that he is not comfortable with long distance travel anymore. Phoenix is about as far away from home as he'll go. For the same reason he is most likely not going on the KT Fan Cruise set for next January to Hawaii. (Meri and I hope to be there when the ship docks - I'll be the haoli boy diving for quarters in the bay.)
