Can anyone provide a better photo of the door seen here circled in red? If no photo, a description? Is it wood? Would it have originally been painted gray like the rest of the ship?

On the subject of doors and hatches, is there a rule of thumb as to how they are hung, that is, in which way they swing open? I am building a kit with individual doors and hatches. They are so detailed as to be for either right or left side mounting. I want to be sure they are placed correctly.
