I've often wondered about that....what did the "average" fighting man think during the war about its outcome...how superiors were able to improve morale in case the troops became discouraged or doubtful.
I can appreciate wondering if you would make it back alive. It seems that I remember my father or some other relative saying that there were times that they just didn't think very much about life after the war because they were so uncertain about whether they would make it back.
