On the other hand there were several times that I, and many others, didn't think we would make it back alive.
I personally could not see ahead to a life AFTER the war. Of course, that may have been because I was very young.
I can now look back and see what effect being in combat before age 18 had on me. Then I remember all the little children involved in bombings, shelling, small arms fire, and all the other horrors of war, and I realize that it is no wonder why some people, and some things, are as they are.
I get very disgusted by the actions of those who advocate "peace at any price", and who show contempt for military personnel. If ANYONE HATES WAR it certainly is the MILITARY who have had to fight the wars. Sometimes it has been necessary to fight a war. Sometimes it has been necessary to amputate a persons arm to SAVE THEIR LIFE!!
Late in WWII we were convinced we would be at war with Russia before long.
It hasn't happened yet and I pray it never happens. Remember, the North Koreans were backed by Russia and the Chinese after they invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. The North Koreans are blustering again as I write this. My best friend, Corporal Richard Millis, was the first Hoosier killed in action in the Korean war. He was killed on 30 June 1950. Who knows...it can happen again! The war never officailly ended. There is only a "truce".
