Here's one for Roy, and anyone else who might recall. In April, 1948, the Navy decided to combine the Signalmen and Quartermaster rates into a single rate (Quartermaster). For those of you who were around, did this merge require you to learn the "other half" of the rate? Wondering if this delayed some promotions, etc. Or, did Signalmen still do Signalmen tasks, and Quartermasters do Quartermaster tasks.
Seems this could screw up things royally, which, apparently it did, as the Navy reversed itself a few years later when they found out this was a dumb idea.
Anyway, curious about the transition.
