I found an Impulse in the junk yard.

I found a 1985 Isuzu Impulse in the junk yard this week end. Years ago I got the brakes off of an ’86 Impulse, but I didn’t get a chance to really look at the car since the yard was about to crush it. This time I was able to give it a bit more time to look at things. The uni-body is similar to a Chevette underneath, not surprising given that GM and Isuzu were tied together pretty good in the 70’s and 80’s. There are some tweaks to the lay out, but the interesting thing is that there is some extra bracing here and there. There is an extra panel that goes from the frame rail up to the shock mount area. The cross member looks very close to the Chevette, but has re-enforcements added. There is a flat plate added along the bottom of the cross member and the tube that holds the upper A-arm bolt has a large strap over it. I find the cross member bracing interesting since it seems to address two areas that people have had concerns and problems with. Unfortunately I didn’t have a measuring tape on me, so I don’t know if the cross member is the same width as a Chevette member. I was able to grab the front spindles/hubs and the rear differential. The yard I was at wasn’t all that cheap, so I wasn’t able to grab anything else. If the pricing had been better I would have tried to get the cross member, the fender liners, and the under tray between the radiator and cross member.
