Transport issues..yep! Sucks with no ride, really need two, so you can leapfrog repairs....
Your fuel system and bumming out, etc..IF POSSIBLE, only use non ethanol fuel. No idea in your area, but you can check here:

I call it ethanol contaminated gas, it is pure crap! I get tons of cheap/free saws that have like dissolved gas lines and gummed out carbs because people run that cheap crap gas in them. You will pay a little more per gallon for pure gas, but get way better mileage and less fuel delivery issues.
If you can drive stick, I recommend any good shape japanese vehicle ('yota at the top,. but they are all good) with a four banger and 5 speed manual. Best mileage and reliability usually. Lot of enthusiast forums where every possible gotcha has been explored and work arounds/fixes identified, so you can nip problems in the bud before they happen.
For US vehicles I think your best small cars on a cheap budget are the small extended cab pickups (small but real back seats/or cargo areas), either ford ranger or chevy s10. Just think of them as nice roomy comfy cars with really big trunks. 4 cylinder 5 speed will get great mileage, much easier and cheaper to work on and maintain than little front engine front wheel drive cars.
