Here are some of the milestones that I remember:
Tonight, I think I mapped squares 39, 40, and 41 (out of 49 total). I wonder if I've at least sailed through or past every area now. I'm just taking my time with these last few squares and mapping them in a strange order.
I should have 23 of the treasure charts. That might be half of them. There are spots glowing in squares where I haven't even fed the fish to put them on my sea chart yet.
I think I've traded about five items with the merchants now. One seemed to be sending me backwards in the sequence, if that makes much sense.
I have the first upgrades for two of the weapons. Similar to how the wallet has two upgrades, I think these are still 30 away from full capacity.
I've taken photos of about 21 different characters or enemies for the figurine gallery. I think I submitted 18 of them. The weird thing is, I wish there was a way to save all of your photography, since I've been trying to get the best pictures possible, but the sculptor essentially "deletes" them from my album. I mean, if he didn't, there would be no way to complete the gallery, since the capacity is 12 photos. Even with submitting 18 photos, I have more figures than that, because some seem to give you bonuses for taking one character's photo. There are also two little girls in the field on Windfall Island where I guess you only need one of them to get credit for their combined statue. A few figures are probably going to show someone in multiple poses/sets of clothes from different parts of the game.
It feels like there's just too much to do, and I'm trying to get further along with the figures, because I had a late start to opening the gallery and submitting the pictures. Some islands like Windfall even make it impossible to collect all the pictures you need in less than three trips. I'm stubborn and don't really want to use the warp mechanic.
As far as advancing the main story, I read in a guide about the "creepy" cutscene where a fairy gives you something you'll need to get further in the game. It's hard to say the creepy parts without spoilers, so there's some advanced warning. She almost reminds me of Fi from a later game, but not quite. Then, she might have some kind of "voodoo" doll, which turns into two fountain fairies, and then they seem to enter Link's chest/body. After that, the fairy is flirting with him? That was my understanding of it all.
It's hard to know where to focus next. On my home island, I tried the game where you have to land 300 blows before taking three hits. I finally saw how there's a counter, but in a corner of the screen where I wouldn't be focusing during a fight. I got up to 252, but then I took the third hit. There must not be a reward unless you get to the full 300. That character who spars with you should finally be able to tell me about the "spoils" that you steal from Darknuts. I have 10 to give to him. There's not much else that I might be able to do on my home island without other things that I know about, such as doubling the magic meter. There's a hilltop that I know I've floated to before, but now it feels out of reach. Assuming I did get there, I probably couldn't smash the big stone head with the skull hammer. I've been trying to hit lots of rocks with the skull hammer, and it just bounces off of them. I think all it really did was to push a few barriers down in the dungeon where you receive it. Then, it did play a role in beating up the boss. Since then, you only seem to need it for pushing one switch. I thought it would be a much more versatile item.
To advance much further, I know I need to get items from places that you weren't able to neutralize without getting the fire and ice powers.
After that, go to a temple, because I've been in the overworld for so long?
Another thing I like to do with the exploration is to pick a row and go from island to island, seeing if I have everything. It's hard to accomplish that or not need to come back later. Just taking Row "A" as an example (the top seven squares), I know that I can't get into the temple with a wind obstacle before visiting the ice location that's down in Row F.
I started making a list of all the islands, with things to do in each place, but I stopped in Row C to avoid some spoilers of unmarked locations. Right now, I'd have to stop around Row D to avoid spoilers, although I think I have all of F and G visible on my sea chart.
My next chance to play could be Thursday.
Better be heading to bed.
