As a side quest, I think I figured out how to play "Super Mario 3D World" in single player mode with the Pro controller. You're allowed to change controllers from the menu (although it's not very patient with waiting for you to press the A button on the new controller). What that seems to do is, you become "player 2." The Player 1 slot is just empty. As I suspected, there are some stages that become off limits when you only have the Pro controller. Captain Toad for sure, but there are also a few stages that depend upon touching the screen or blowing into the microphone.
The last tangent might be how I watched a YouTube video that kind of showed me all the green stars I've been missing. I'm not sure if that "spoiled" the game for me, or if it was a case of, I doubt I EVER would have checked there, unless the "Ghost Mii" feature suggested it (but those are turned off in my game). The hidden areas of this game remind me a little of the first "Donkey Kong Country." Is that really a hole, or is there something solid below? There's an obvious path forward, but you need this detour first. I suspected one stamp was behind some bricks, but I didn't have a way to break them. Then it was like, duh, they keep rolling bombs towards me.
So, "The Wind Waker." It's still too early to judge, but the story is kind of drawing me in. I haven't checked a guide yet, but I'm OCD about trying to do every little thing on the first island. Why was the one guy crouching and asking me to catch a pig? I brought it to him, but he didn't react to it. Then I saw the woman who is probably his wife, but she only told me a story to relay to my sister (she's right on the lookout tower, so why did I have to be the messenger?). Grandma told me to get my sister, but my sister told me to go find a sword! I talked to the sword guy two times before Aryll suggested I get a weapon, but he kept saying it was too early for me to actually keep the sword outside of his house. I think that's what frustrates some people about the Zelda series in general, and possibly why they changed to an "open world" format? You want to get past that barrier, which looks like only a sword would cut it? There's probably a way to do that within the first 10 minutes of the newest game.
I've already read spoilers in the past about the "pirate girl." I don't know why a bird that enters the story looks like a legendary Pokemon. Then, the mail carrier is also a large bird, or someone in a costume?
You know what else I can't do now? Open a fairy fountain. The sign already tells you, "HERE IT IS," and then the A button suggests you should try to pick up this rock that's about three or four times taller than Link.
I'm not sure if you stay as "Young Link" in this game (no spoilers, please!), but that could be awkward. Combat hasn't been hard so far. I realize there's more to it than hack and slash. No enemy has damaged me yet, but they also didn't seem to attack or put up a strong defense. I was dodging sideways or doing backflips anyway.
Pretty much, I probably have to leave this island and get on with the "real" game.
The graphics are just OK so far. I appreciate some of the bright colors. I guess, what I've come to think about Nintendo's art styles is that, maybe they work best on smaller screens? And now, with magnifying them, it shows some of the limitations or the lack of extra detail? I also don't have the biggest TV, or a true 1080p panel. The music is still catchy, upbeat, and makes you want to keep playing.
Overall, I'd score that first section around the low 8 range. I guess it's hard for them to keep making the first few tasks unique or fun (find the sword, find the shield). Plus, how doesn't Link realize that it's his own birthday?
I guess more to come as I make some progress.
