Once the new system was announced, I think game journalists seemed to ask some thoughtful questions right away. Will this be a 1080p system, or even better? I think even Wii U was capable of 1080p, right? Or, you could output the video as 1080p, and then I'm not sure if the games were "upscaled," or native 1080p. For "portable mode," it makes sense just to use 720p, since the screen part (basically the core of the system) is 1,280 x 720. What about battery life? It sounds like it might be WORSE than the Wii U GamePad that already kind of drives me nuts. I've heard that "hardcore gaming" on a mobile phone might last less than an hour, or make the phone hot enough to burn your hands, but 2.5 hours as the minimum? My cell phone might date back to 2003 or so, but it's taken until this year to have a battery life shorter than about 36 hours (not making lots of calls or sending texts).
Then, there are things like, what about online? I read a headline that Miiverse might be going away. I've barely started exploring that social network. Why would they add a button to capture screenshots for a social network, and then stop developing their own social network? I think Miiverse is considered "proprietary," but I've seen ways to view the content on a PC or maybe mobile devices. Other parts of the online service sound like now, they're going to cost some money. In the past, I don't even know how they went without charging you any money! They might not have used separate servers or had many added costs (the console itself was a server?). I think it has Wi-Fi, but how useful is that once you leave home? Is there even a data plan option?
I saw the video explaining the Joy-Cons. There might be SOME neat things about them, but how often do other developers really take the time to incorporate those "gimmicks"? It sounds like they haven't given up on motion controls. This time, you could actually track motion separately between the left and right units. OK, but is that another "blow into the microphone" deal that you only see in two games? There's a way to use some kind of camera that tracks hand movement. For what purpose, though? It can measure how far away that hand is from the Joy-Con. Then, the other thing they wanted to mention in the presentation was "Rumble HD." Huh? Now, I can tell the difference between one, two, or three ice cubes in a glass? I'm trying to figure out the relevance for using that IN A GAME! There's some kind of attachment that I think could make a difference when you hold the tiny Joy-Con in your man-sized hands (a "wrist strap"). In addition to the strap part, it just seems to give you bigger L and R buttons. To me, though, that kind of tells you that they made the Joy-Cons TOO SMALL in the first place!!!
Then, once you get to the games, it's like, don't people have those on the Wii U already? I have to admit that I didn't watch the Mario trailer, but it seems as if they took away the fantasy factor by trying to put him in a realistic environment. That would kind of pull it away from the world of being a video game to something that you know isn't really happening. It sounds like they fixed Battle Mode in "Mario Kart 8," but I haven't really been playing that game for the Battle Mode since maybe the N64 days. Does that mean they won't "fix" the Wii U version of Kart to give it the extra features? I didn't get into "Splatoon" yet. Zelda is going to be on the Wii U as well, so what would be the difference? I bought "Twilight Princess" as a GameCube disc and still like that version (not having played the Wii game or the remake). The weird thing is how I think I completed the game mostly on Wii hardware in GameCube mode.
I don't know much else, but the crazy neon colors for the Joy-Cons actually make me want the GRAY, even though I thought the gray was too "plain" in the original teaser video. A few accessories make it sound more expensive than a PS4 Slim (maybe not the Pro, unless you go overboard). They still only give you 32 GB of internal memory, with a chance to expand it. Hopefully, expansion cards will keep increasing their capacity (I've heard only 128 GB or 256 GB are the current limits), but would people have to keep a game card inserted all the time, or switch cards around? I know that the IGN folks just wanted to download a bunch of titles and carry them around in a digital format. Oh, yeah! They're bringing back "Street Fighter 2," which seems really weird in 2017. I think all that they added was "Violent Ken" and "Evil Ryu" (neither of which sounds appealing), but they're sticking to a kind of pixel art style from the SNES days. I might just want to play a Virtual Console version, if one of those exists.
It's sad how this might be the first Nintendo generation that I skip. It's not even because I'd rather have XBox or PlayStation (other than for the sports games which have been better for several years). I just think that I'm an "old school" player, who only cares about connecting something to the TV and having the best local single player or multiplayer experience.
