In fantasy, I actually ended up losing the two-week total in both leagues (public and family). The family loss was interesting. We technically tied, but we set a rule where the higher seed gets a two point bonus. The final score was 215-217! The other thing to consider is how my cousin became the higher seed. I had a winnable game "on paper" against the last place team from the opposing division. My uncle's record may have been deceptive, because the teams he played kept averaging over 100 points per week. Meanwhile, the cousin who got a higher seed than me also lost in week 17, to finish with the same record. That tie was broken using fantasy points, where I was only the 7th place team in the league based on total points scored. In the playoffs, though, my 215 points would have beaten any other team over those two weeks. All I had to do was qualify in the last spot!
In the public league, at least I know why I couldn't complete the 40 point comeback. I needed to go ALL IN on Matt Ryan, Devonta Freeman, Taylor Gabriel, Falcons D/ST , and Matt Bryant. The position that hurt me the most on the other team was D/ST. Why is that ironic? I named myself "East Coast Defense," and had units like the Vikings (probably the #1 D/ST once the season is over) and the Ravens (#4 through week 16, but terrible in the last two or three games). I went against the Dolphins D/ST when they scored 15 and 21 points. In week 13, I believe they had negative points. In weeks 16 and 17, they have two more negative scores, and -10 overall. Why was I only able to face them during the 36 point outburst? That's the "fairness" of fantasy football.
In the public league, I'm battling for third place. It's pretty tight right this moment (167-175). The other team doesn't have any players in the 8:30 game, while I'm taking a chance with a RB/WR Ty Montgomery. When Devonta Freeman had only touched the ball three times, I saw a 20 point score for him. You have to figure, if all you did was score three TDs from inside the 3 yard line, that would be at least 18 points. With three touches of 99 yards each and a TD all three times, you'd be around 47 points. Now, I'm looking, and he has 18 fewer rushing yards after two more carries, so how did that happen?
In the championship match, it looks like the #4 seed from our division may pull the "upset." He's matched up against players like Le'Veon Bell (who didn't play in a game that wasn't going to affect seeding), and Cameron Brate (injured reserve). I would be leading either of the finalists, but it might not be as insulting to lose to the eventual champion, who is the only team left from our strong division with a chance to win it all. This week, the #4 seed got 48 total standard points (no extra points for receptions) from Julian Edelman and Zach Ertz.
On the family side of things, I REALLY don't want to be in last place. The 2015 season was kind of scary, because I got the #7 seed (with a 7-6 record!), played the highest scoring team in the consolation round, and then needed to win the 9th place ladder match. We don't have any "punishments" like tattoos or shaved heads and needing to wear a costume, but it's kind of a pride thing. If I came into the league in 2013 and was a finalist right away, how can I be this "BAD" at the game? The good news is that I'm leading, 154-136. All of my players are active or have gone final. We're leading the QB spot, 6-1. My cousin used Dak Prescott, even when the Cowboys said they might rest him after a certain number of plays. Tyreek Hill kind of defies the "logic" of fantasy football. He's eligible to play in the WR slot. If you look at his stats from weeks 15 and 16, he had zero receptions, AND a minimum of 15 fantasy points. Last week, he even outscored Odell Beckham, Jr. During that same period, he had 7 rushes for 163 yards and 2 TDs. Isn't that more than 23 yards per rush attempt? Today might finally be his "bust" game, at least through the first half.
Jordan Reed had me worried. Assuming that he played every game from weeks 13 through 16, he recorded 2 catches for 16 yards (0 TDs). That's only a 50/50 chance to catch ONE ball in each game. Today, he's at least at 3 catches for 34 yards.
The family championship might be anticlimactic. My cousin Andrew is in the final for the fourth time in five seasons, but he's only 1-2 in the other appearances. My cousin Robert might be in his first or second playoff tournament, and he led 151-80 after last week (Andrew got two extra points from being a higher seed). Right now, it's down to 176-207. That took a BIG bite out of the deficit, but Andrew only has two players in the late game. He already has 27 points from Matt Ryan. The bad news is how it's not even halftime yet, so you'd figure he might leave the game as soon as it looks like the Falcons are definitely going to win. Andrew has Zach Ertz (25) and Bilal Powell (19). Then he took a risk on WR Adam Thielen (0 points). For Robert, his biggest surprise is probably Devontae Booker with 21 points in the first half, not to mention the Broncos leading 17-0 in a game that can't get them to the playoffs, but could cost the Raiders a #2 seed. I'm assuming David Johnson started his game, but now he has a questionable designation.
If Robert did win, it would be the fifth different winner in five seasons. It would also be an almost even split between people who HAVEN'T won a season yet. I count six people who have at least played in a final (our biggest league had 10 teams in 2015). Andrew has definitely played in the most finals. Calvin and Cory are undefeated when they reach the finals.
Well, I'd probably like to watch at least part of the remaining games. Better wrap this post up soon.
