In the league where I'm the #1 seed, I'm playing a 7-5-1 team from my division. We technically split the season series, but he kept playing me close. The first game was 100-90 (in my favor). The second game was 103-116 (a win for him). That means, in a two week format, he would've taken the overall victory, 206-203. Looking at the box score from that 103-116 game, it was a week where I think I had my best lineup (taking byes into consideration) locked in. He was +19 at positions like D/ST and kicker.
Then, if you look at our week 14 game, he easily won, 70-109. I did have some bright spots in Matt Ryan and Jeremy Hill (@ Cleveland). Ezekiel Elliott got held to 10 points, which was a new "floor" for him. In the real NFL, that felt like "good" news, because the Giants won that game 10-7, and the Cowboys haven't clinched the division. It's just tough when there's a conflict between your NFL team and your fantasy players. My best options at WR only scored 6 and 4 points. I used the tight end with a separated shoulder for his "upside," and got 1 point out of that, while a bench player could have contributed 12 points. I still would've been trailing, but I could've been in the 80 point range.
Then you come to this week, where I practically bet everything on the Falcons. They were at home, facing a team on a 12 game losing streak, who rank 32nd against the running back position. Did I take that much of a risk, though? Nope! I started Matt Ryan, which was an easy "decision." He only had to attempt 23 passes for his team to amass 41 points, and they pulled him out in the fourth quarter. He also finished with under 300 passing yards. Devonta Freeman rebounded from his 18 total yards last week (in a 42-14 blowout?!!), with 155 total yards and 3 TDs. I mean, couldn't he have split those games up a little more evenly? You'd want your RB2 to be averaging 86.5 yards and 1.5 TDs per game, but not as a split of 18/0 and 155/3. It all counts towards a two week total, but that would've been devastating in the regular season. Over the past four weeks, I think he has SEVEN TDs and something like 18 standard points per game, but he might only move up ONE spot in the overall rankings at his position.
I also had Taylor Gabriel (Falcons WR), the Falcons' D/ST (even with a #1 and #3 D/ST on the roster), and Matt Bryant. Bryant definitely came through with 14 points. I knew ahead of time that the Dolphins D/ST (for my opponent) dropped 21 on the Jets Saturday night, so how do you compete with that? I went Ravens instead of Falcons, and left 6 points on the bench. Taylor Gabriel was 10 points better than Tyrell Williams. Right now, I know the other team is locked in at 198 points. I just have to see whether 160 plus Ezekiel Elliott and Jordan Reed (Monday night game, if he plays) can make up the difference. It could only be a 22 point gap or less.
In my family league, I was down 79-108 after the first week. Most of that gap probably came from Drew Brees and Devonta Freeman combining for 7 points. Well, check out this week:
Drew Brees 389 yds, 4 TDs @ Arizona
(Teams are supposed to throw maybe 1 TD pass when they go to Arizona, and Brees has better home stats than road stats.)
Devonta Freeman 30 pts
Jeremy Hill 10 pts (a solid "floor" for RB2 or flex)
Odell Beckham, Jr. 12pts (He made it too stressful by not getting his TD until late in the 4th quarter of a 10-6 game.)
Tyreek Hill 15 pts (He plays wide receiver, right? Well, he didn't record a catch, and I'm not sure how he has 15 points in this league, and 12 in another league [different scoring rules]. It looks like they just handed off to him ONCE, and he took it the distance.)
Frank Gore 11 pts (That was without scoring a TD. Instead, he had another solid "floor" performance with 115 total yards.)
Giants D/ST 9 pts (I thought it was 10, but they may have given up a certain number of total yards when the last play of the game was a long screen pass.)
Justin Tucker 12 pts (He should still be the #1 kicker after this week, despite maybe 25 extra points attempts all year long?)
Pretty much, no bad performances there! I'm leading 215-184. That number of 215 would be leading the #1 seed by 82 points!! Imagine if I had just qualified for the semifinals in the #4 spot!!! The game isn't over, because I still have Jordan Reed on Monday night. Here's the "conflict of interest." The other team has Robert Kelley (Monday night game) and Ezekiel Elliott. If Elliott does really well, it would help me erase that 38 point gap on my other team, but he could also lead my cousin Chris to a win in this consolation game. That's why I don't like having multiple teams in the same season! Through one half of the late game, I believe Elliott had 12 points (meaning 24 over a full game?).
Fantasy is a weird game. I remember having the #1 point total during the playoff weeks in 2013 and in 2015. Where did I finish those years? In 2013, I was runner-up (after leading from the week 16 results), and last season, I won the 9th place game after getting pummeled in the first consolation round. Not only that, but what about when Tyreek Hill had that long run for great fantasy stats, but the Chiefs lost a home game that might have cost them a chance to win the division or take a bye in the first round?
