These were my good calls from last week:
Jets, Colts, Panthers, Falcons, Bengals, Chargers, Packers, Broncos, Seahawks
These were the misses:
Steelers, Bills, Eagles, Raiders, Cardinals, Cowboys
Looking at the misses, I'm trying to find any patterns or lessons learned. Somehow, I favored the teams that had major injuries on offense (Steelers and Cowboys). Weren't they both playing against 0-3 teams? I think the Steelers were even AT HOME. I tend to view the Steelers as having the best running back and the best wide receiver in football. If not, then try to name some other combinations where a team has two top 5 or top 3 guys at both positions. Maybe the Bengals (A. J. Green, Jerermy Hill), but they don't really use Hill as the "feature back." Jordy Nelson got hurt for the Packers. They have Eddie Lacy, but even he seems to split carries with James Starks or comes out to rest on certain drives.
Anyway, even the wins aren't always a sure thing. I think the Chargers got to kick twice due to a penalty? The first kick missed. I think the game still would've gone to overtime, though. The Jaguars missed two kicks at the end of regulation. Once, I think they called their own time out, but the kick still got attempted. Those were pretty long attempts if I recall (53 yards?). In overtime, they missed another long attempt (48 yards?).
You also saw the Packers held to 17 points, but it seemed like a "blowout" if you were to compare the stats that the 49ers put together. I saw how the Broncos game ended with a "strip sack." Then, the Seahawks needed to literally punch the ball loose to preserve a slim win (I've only seen a few replays, since I don't like to watch the Seahawks live if I can help it).
How about my other picks?
Eliminator: Cardinals
For some reason, they don't prevent you from picking even after your first loss (that was week 2 for me, where the Dolphins didn't live up to the trust I put in them). Now I can only hope for 15-2. I don't get how this game was even CLOSE when you look at the "on paper" statistics. The Rams are almost last place in the league at gaining yards, but is that because their special teams are amazing and usually give them strong field position? The Rams can sack you like crazy, but their defensive stats look mediocre, too. All I know is that they've been able to shut down offenses like the Steelers and the Cardinals by holding them to field goals. In the Steelers game, it kind of made sense, because they had to come to St. Louis, and Roethlisberger got injured. How did they go into Arizona and do it to a team that was winning a huge percentage of their home games?
Record Breaker - Latavius Murray, Raiders.
I saw something in this matchup. The Bears were supposed to be weak against the run. Murray doesn't seem to share carries with another dominant back. Instead, I ended up with consecutive weeks of only 49 rushing yards.
I have most of my picks ready to go for week 5, but the Monday night game gives me some pause. I'm not sure how deeply to question or analyze what's happening there (Chargers at home, high powered passing attack, Steelers would be wise to try and run the ball against a bottom 8 rushing defense ...).
