In the first eight games, it's hard to see many "upsets" based on what I knew coming into Sunday. I'm calculating a 6-2 prediction record so far. The two losses were the Colts and the Seahawks. That almost could've been the Super Bowl last season! I think the answer to how you beat the Colts is through moving Andrew Luck around the pocket and forcing turnovers. That was the one statistic that gave me some uncertainty. The Bills still had to SCORE, though, and they were up at 27 points today, probably a TD above average, although I didn't look into the splits of points scored at home vs away.
The Seahawks were visiting the Rams. Again, that was a game where I was thinking, OK, the Rams won at home last year, but look at their roster! They were down to just someone named Benny Cunningham at running back. I didn't know if their defense could keep pace with Seattle or contain Russell Wilson. From what I remember, the Rams mostly led the game. Seattle took their first lead on a fumble return TD. I missed seeing how the Rams tied them. Then, Seattle was driving with a slight chance to kick a long FG at the end of regulation. A sack may have changed that scenario.
So, to start overtime, the Rams were going to receive. Seattle called an ONSIDE KICK. I think it's "Moose" Johnston who was saying in the commentary how that's a good move, because your defense can hold the other team to a field goal at most (a TD ends the game under the newer rules, which I still think is dumb), and then you're allowed a possession of your own. In my mind, you're on the road, so why did you give up that kind of field position? Instead of possibly forcing a punt, they did give up the field goal. When Seattle was facing a 4th and short, you knew the play they needed to call, but it looked like a singleback formation from Madden, shotgun, HB draw to the left. St. Louis STUFFED "Beast Mode" in the backfield. GAME OVER! I suppose the Rams had the lead the longest and probably "deserved" the win, but what is the deal with such STUPID calls by Pete Carroll?
In fantasy, I haven't checked the score recently. I've just been doing the calculations in my head, and I know I'm behind at multiple positions already. How did Travis Kelce go off for 2 TDs? He was at or above 100 yards also! This is as a tight end, and the Texans should be a good defense on paper. I realize that doesn't always mean they're better at defending an individual matchup on the opponent's tight end. I had Dwayne Allen, who I saw score a "garbage time" TD that wasn't going to affect the final result of the game. Even with that TD, I'm not sure if he was a better starter than Heath Miller this week. Heath had something like 84 yards, but without scoring a TD.
The Texans were my defense. Maybe that's another lesson I needed to learn? Between the Texans and the Chiefs, they were only supposed to allow other teams to score 17 or 18 points. Not only did the Chiefs top that, but I think they protected the ball (something I noticed when trying to pick a winner in that game). I believe my cousin started the Jets, who were facing the Browns. All I remember last season was how I picked up the Jets once or twice as a "streaming" option, and they weren't forcing any turnovers! Sacks, maybe, but those are only worth 1 point each in fantasy. Yards, yes, but somehow they allowed other teams to score 25 points per game, which is below average. Naturally, they beat up on the Browns this afternoon.
Matt Forte was better than I could've expected (150 or 160 total yards?). I know my cousin started C. J. Anderson (who?), but I forget his RB2. C. J. Anderson and my RB2 (Justin Forsett) are both playing in Denver at the moment.
I'm facing Antonio Brown, who might lead all WRs in points among the completed games. I countered with Dez Bryant, which isn't usually much of a downgrade. I believe Julian Edelman outscored my WR2, Alshon Jeffery. At flex, I think it was Jonathan Stewart vs Frank Gore. Stewart was looking good in yards, but his weakness is a lack of TDs. He didn't have one today. I'm not sure about Gore.
For my cousin, Big Ben's points are already locked in at QB. I'm starting Matt Ryan over Eli Manning. I won't know if those were smart decisions until after Monday Night Football.
In the "late starts," there's still more on the line. I picked the Bengals in ESPN's Eliminator game (I thought it was called Survival or a worse name?). Then, I picked Jeremy Hill to compete against Eric Dickerson's rushing record, at least for week 1. So far, Matt Forte would've been the ideal pick. How would I forecast that, when he averaged 3.9 yards per carry last season, and barely topped 1,000 rushing yards? Against the Packers, I also figured they might throw more. Instead, the Bears tried to play ball control, but the Packers hardly needed any time to score.
Better get back to the action!
