Well, the new series did apparently start last summer. One thing I've wondered is whether it makes sense for the two parents to already have a child in the 7th grade. The father on the new series is actor Ben Savage. According to Wikipedia, he was born four weeks after me. The first season of "Boy Meets World" looks like it premiered 11 days after Ben turned 13. So, I'd figure the episodes were recorded during the time when he was 12 or 13 years old. "Topanga" (Danielle Fishel) is a little younger. She'll turn 34 in May, which means she was probably 11 or 12 during the first season.
I read the episode summaries to find out that the TV wedding was in season 7 (after teasing that topic in season 6). The episode is dated November 5, 1999. Danielle would've been 18 at that time in real life. Ben would've been 19. Their characters were already in college on the show.
The actress who plays Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard) was born in October of 2001. Add about 40 weeks of pregnancy, and her real mother was probably pregnant in January of 2001. The final episode of "Boy Meets World" aired in May 2000, with no mention of Topanga being pregnant yet.
I guess all of that is to say, yes, the ages of the fictional characters do match up, and if a couple did get married that young and had kids right away, they could have a 12- or 13-year-old by age 33/34.
In terms of the new show, I thought I liked it at first. Maybe I didn't see all of the episodes? On the original "BMW," I remember a slightly goofy or rough start. It's not that the kids were "sexual" or "flirty," but I do remember a kiss and some sense of them getting "crushes."
Then I read Common Sense Media reviews, and a bunch of them were pretty harsh. I don't think that site is necessarily "religious" or "prudish." It was just weird to hear the reviews have such a large number of criticisms for what I thought was a goofy but wholesome new show.
I think the cast is supposed to be in middle school, possibly 7th grade. In real life, I believe I started 7th grade in September of 1992. I would've just turned 12. In real life, the actress Rowan Blanchard was 12 when the series started airing, and turned 13 last October. That almost seems to match the idea of her TV "dad" turning 13 just before the first episode of the other series.
Riley/Rowan does have a weird way of speaking. I noticed it more this morning. Reviewers described it as "snot," or like she's congested. She makes goofy smiles a lot, but I'm wondering if that's to mirror Cory from the original series. She's supposed to be his "daughter," right?
When the "BMW" series first started, I sort of remember a group of four main characters: Cory, Shawn, "Minkus" (full name Stuart Minkus), and Topanga. Minkus just seemed to be there as the butt of jokes about nerd stereotypes. Corey and Shawn were the two friends who got the most screen time.
For "GMW," I sort of see the same pattern. They gave Riley a friend named Maya, who comes from a dysfunctional home (probably to contrast how Maya's family seems almost too loving). The part that made me interested at first was how they also added in two guys: Farkle and Lucas. One of the Common Sense Media reviews asked why the name Farkle. I mean, they had Topanga on the original show, right? That's a canyon or a valley somewhere on the West coast. I've mainly heard of farkle as a dice game, but I couldn't tell you the rules off the top of my head. Farkle is supposedly the son of Minkus, who sort of disappeared starting in season 2 of "BMW." The way they're building up Farkle in "GMW" (he's known the two girls since childhood) makes it seem like he'll be there for a while. My main problem with Farkle has been that he doesn't even look like a straight A student. He has the weird Justin Bieber/The Beatles long sideswept bangs for some reason (trying to break stereotypes?), and talks like a young "Casanova." I was glad at first that they didn't make it seem as if intellect made you unable to "fit in" with the "normal" kids. He's still "quirky," though, probably BECAUSE of not fitting certain stereotypes.
Lucas is apparently from out of town (he's mentioned Texas). I'm not sure of his deal. A few times, Riley seems to "swoon" over him, and he called her a princess another time, while taking her away on a white horse.
Overall, it's hard to get a strong impression of the show. I haven't been watching it faithfully or in the right order. My first impressions were that it has a lot of positives. I mean, a two parent marriage? New shows are usually "reality" or some kind of competition. The parents engage with their kids and seem to go through "normal" struggles (not wanting to see them grow up). One episode was about "family" game night, and Cory basically lamenting that Riley invited multiple friends to join the "family." That sounds a lot tamer than 90% of the shows on TV.
Regarding some of the criticisms, maybe I'd have to watch closer or see the full season. I mainly look at my own life to gauge when it was appropriate to have a "crush." I can actually remember "stalking" a girl in KINDERGARTEN to the point where she tattled on me. Does that mean I've always been a "horn dog"? There was even a "safety patrol" (an "older woman") where I remember having feelings of attraction toward her outer beauty. I probably shouldn't name real names or full names in a Facebook world. In third grade, I had a crush. Around fourth or fifth grade, my attention went to someone else. I remember being "crushed" when she basically told me off during lunch period, with lots of witnesses.
In 6th grade, we definitely had a dance. I may never forget it, due to how one guy tried to "fight" me within the first 10-15 minutes. Later, I sort of recovererd, and was dancing "The Twist." Of course, a bully wanted to ruin that by surprising me and allowing some girls to see my "tighty whities." I don't think that's been as painful over time.
Anyway, a few criticisms of the show were along those lines. How can you have a school dance in 7th grade? I mentioned how that was a "normal" part of my childhood, right? The girls wear makeup? I guess I'm not good at telling when ANY woman wears makeup . I was looking closer this morning, and maybe Maya wears the eyelash makeup (is that mascara?) and lip gloss. Riley doesn't look made up to me. I'm not sure if the characters seem too flirty for their ages. Kids do seem to be "growing up faster," even compared with the 1990s. That doesn't mean they'd HAVE to flirt. The thing I've noticed is how they're definitely not kissing or "petting" each other, which seems age appropriate (or would really offend me if they did that to young actors). There's still a sense where I assumed the four characters are just friends, and I hope they have some more time to stay "friends" before the series moves to high school.
Long post/review, right? Overall, I still think it's a neat series, and not trying to be risque or offensive. Compared to the original (which seems inevitable), I doubt it could ever reach that level. I mean, they're not trying to duplicate everything from that other show. If they did, would that be even more cheesy? There are some aspects that I miss from the old show. They had the "senior citizen" generation with "Mr. Feeny" (the voice actor of "Kit," the car from "Knight Rider"). He was there to sort of be the "curmudgeon," but also a voice of wisdom and experience. In Cory's family, he was the middle child. The older brother Eric started out as more of the "horn dog," which would make sense (high school age). The younger sister was the brat at first, then almost disappeared or lost importance. This new show has Riley as the oldest, and I've only seen one brother, who is supposed to be 4 or 5 (big age difference). I can't really see this series having a cool interplay between Riley and her little brother like the Eric and Cory dynamic.
I guess it's time to finally post this and get to the SSB settings, eh?
