They obviously wanted to pay homage to the series called "Boy Meets World." This seems like the next generation, which would follow the daughter of two main characters from "BMW."
For whatever reason, the original "BMW" is one of my favorite series from any time period. I believe it premiered around the same time when I was in middle school. It's also set somewhere near Philly, which is almost my part of the country. Until about age 24, I was maybe a 15 minute train ride away from Manhattan. Now it would take probably 90 minutes in opposite directions to reach NYC (we just say "The City") or Philly.
The concept of the series was to follow "everyman" Cory Matthews through his "coming of age" years. He started as the middle child (older brother, younger sister). By the end of the series, they added another sibling.
From what I remember, season one had Cory acting like a typical boy (hyperactive, spending time in detention). The scripts kept making fun of "Minkus" (his last name?) - a sort of nerdy, know-it-all student. In later seasons, Cory calmed down a lot. Shawn was his best friend, and they almost couldn't be more different. Shawn's family wasn't really intact, which led to conflict at certain points.
In season two, it seemed like they had a theme for each episode, based on English class (possibly because that's when "Mr. Turner" joined the cast?). It seemed like Cory and Shawn were just discovering girls, but didn't want to make any firm commitments. In fact, their shenanigans usually led to trouble.
By season three, that's when I remember the recurring female character Topanga becoming the love interest for Cory. Of course, there was still the drama about will they or won't they stay together and some problems that came up.
Season four kind of stayed in that sweet spot, although I don't remember more than a few of the episodes from the beginning of the season.
Around season five, it kind of gets hazy for me. Season three may have been the start of high school. By season five, Cory's older brother Eric was probably college age and started to become more of a main character. I didn't really like what they did with him. He was always teasing Cory (that's pretty much your job as an older brother, LOL - speaking as one myself), but he didn't really seem to be the type A high achieving personality (a stereotype of firstborns).
I think they had seven seasons before wrapping up the series. By the end, Shawn gained a love interest and a sibling. Eric was the only person who still didn't have a love interest (only some participation in a love triangle). Even the uptight older character "Mr. Feeny" (you'd recognize his voice from "Night Rider," if you ever watched that series) had a love interest! It was also one of the few series where the characters who seemed to "belong" together (meaning Cory and Topanga) DID end up together. It would probably make me furious to go back and watch something like "Dawson's Creek," where I thought the Dawson character had one of the worst endings in the series (but at least he didn't die).
Anyway ... I'm not sure what that has to do with "Girl Meets World." There have definitely been more girl themed shows in recent history. Even in the corny one about teenage wizards, Selena Gomez overshadowed two brothers, due to acting like a spoiled brat. Is she that way in real life? Not to sound "sexist", but relating to a male character growing up was probably a little easier than it would be to watch a young girl grow up.
The "Girl Meets World" series plans to air on Disney channel, and I'm not actually sure if I want to keep satellite TV service at the moment. In general, I haven't thought that many of the other Disney shows aimed at "tweens" or teenagers have been very funny or entertaining. That's sort of prejudging the show, though. They definitely brought back "Cory" (Ben Savage - younger brother of Fred/"Kevin Arnold"). Topanga (Danielle Fishel) is there. They promised some cameos from Shawn and Mr. Feeny.
Meanwhile, I just feel like buying the box set of "BMW" for some reason. I've probably seen the reruns too many times already, so only seasons 5-7 might seem somewhat "new" to me.
Just wanted to share those thoughts. My taxes still aren't done (whose fault is that?), and I wanted to write some other sections of the Roku review, since I've had a few more weeks to activate more services.
