Losing just makes me ANGRY! I was thinking today how my team might be a mirror image of last season.
Check this out:
2013
Week 1 - narrow 4 point loss
Week 2 - win
Week 3 - narrow 6 point loss
Week 4 - 139 points, and we still LOST (1-3)
Week 5 - Back on a win streak
Week 6 - The second of what would turn into 12 consecutive wins (3-3)
2014
Week 1 - narrow 6 point win (with #1 overall QB on the bench)
Week 2 - I had one TD from my QB (plus three interceptions, so a net of -2 points), and one TD from my tight end in the flex spot. That was all. My kicker led the starters in scoring. Besides the kicker, only Antonio Brown (starter) and Philip Rivers (bench) had at least 10 points.
Week 3 - Dominant 44 point win in a "Fantasy Bowl" rematch
Week 4 - Highest single week score (in our league) of the season (3-1)
Week 5 - Defense had negative points to drop me below 80. I couldn't have won even with my best lineup.
Week 6 - I would've beaten my uncle in 80% of the previous games, and now he scores the most points of the season? One lineup change (Rivers) may have given me the win or a chance to tie. (3-3)
Basically, 2013 looked like this:
L, W, L, L, W, W
This year, I see:
W, L, W, W, L, L
I don't like excuses, but it's freaky how three of my opponents had their best game of the year (up to this point) on the week when they happened to be playing me. That's why I say, "COME ON, MAN!" How are you averaging 80 points the rest of the time? In my uncle's case, he left Marshawn Lynch, Demaryius Thomas and Arian Foster on the bench in week 5. For Lynch and Thomas, it seemed to be because they were on a week 4 bye (and he didn't reinsert them?). Arian Foster has been an injury concern.
I should still be the #2 scoring offense after this week's games, but with a 3-3 record. Two teams look like they're headed for 4-2. One had a chance to reach 5-1 this week.
I KNOW my guys are quality and usually consistent. Ironically, what I thought could be my strength (since I drafted three RBS in the first four rounds) hasn't worked out yet. Doug Martin is pretty much a bust, unless he has an amazing second half. His stats ARE consistent, but they're consistently around 40 rushing yards. I don't think you can afford to keep running when you fall behind 28-0 in the first quarter. Eddie Lacy showed a spark in the Thursday night game. Otherwise, he's kind of a 50 yards or below player. I had DeMarco Murray (on waivers) and Le'Veon Bell (undrafted) last season, KNOWING they were decent, but I passed them up in the draft.
I hope A. J. Green figures out his foot injury. Antonio Brown is obviously a top 5 guy at wide receiver. I'm not sure if Steve Smith will hold up as a 100 yard player. He keeps having to push off to make catches.
There's still a major chunk of the season left, and I think I'll remain in playoff position when the standings get updated. I've just struggled to take it to that next level. After week 7, I will have played every team at least once. This next opponent went big in the first three rounds: Peyton Manning, Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski. There are other positions, you know! I shouldn't lose too much ground at QB. My tight ends are both in the top 5 to start this season. I'd really be insulted losing to a backfield of C. J. Spiller (who appropriately fumbled this week) and Darren Sproles (pretty much a second-string guy who returns kicks). Sproles got hurt, so the bench has guys like Pierre Thomas (playing on a pass first team, but has boom of bust scores) and Maurice Jones-Drew (aging, and stuck on the Raiders).
