I try to look at a bunch of variables when I pick my lineup, but this league seems too hard to predict. Theoretically, the Bengals and Patriots look like teams going in opposite directions. You had the Chiefs D/ST racking up the points against the Patriots on Monday night, but that game was in KC, and they're historically known for sacks and pressuring the QB in a loud stadium (they set some kind of new world record for crowd noise). The Bengals are the #1 scoring defense and had a bye week to rest and prepare for New England, who will be on "short rest."
I hope that ends up meaning something! I doubt the NFL is "fixed," so how are there four or five games per week that finish with almost identical scores? I realize there are only certain ways to score and some point totals might be more likely just due to statistics and probability. It's creepy, though. Last week, it was all about 38 points. This week, 17 or 20 points was good enough to win multiple games. One of them even needed overtime for a 20-17 final score.
My biggest lineup goof looks like sitting Greg Olsen and starting Martellus Bennett. They were both featured in the same game, playing for opposite teams. One of NFL Network's shows ("Playbook"?) was even showing the other day how the Panthers can cover tight ends with their linebackers (or mostly Luke Kuechly?). Bennett was the "#1" tight end coming into this week (Julius Thomas averages more fantasy points, but he had a bye, allowing Bennett to overtake his point total). Bennett would've outscored Olsen in three of the first four weeks. I think I even flexed Bennett one week to get both of them in the lineup. Bennett is really that good, or has been to start the season. I'm pretty sure he'll still have the most receptions on the Bears team after today's game. You have to figure Alshon Jeffery or Brandon Marshall will eventually pass him in yardage if they play all 16 games.
Anyway, I sort of did well at running back: 36 points from three players (one flex). Those points were mostly earned by Eddie Lacy, though. Thursday games have been pretty awful this season, unless the goal is to showcase broken tackles, missed tackles, pushing the defender across the goal line like one of those big sleds ...
Antonio Brown was supposed to have a "no-brainer" matchup (#1 WR in total points vs #32 pass defense). The Jaguars held "Big Ben" to some pretty average stats, though. Brown didn't score a TD or eclipse 100 yards. Wide receiver was a strength of the team I'm playing against this week: Jordy Nelson, Alshon Jeffery, Jeremy Maclin. I'm pretty sure all of those guys scored a TD, since they have a minimum of 12 points.
Doug Martin actually had more total yards this week than in week 4, but fewer fantasy points. That's how much a TD versus no TD seems to make a difference in fantasy scoring. I sat Jamaal Charles, since that looked like a bad matchup. The Chiefs just played on Monday, and Charles easily had his best game of the season, scoring three times (two of those were on PASS plays!). Now, they have to travel out to San Fran, and play against a run defense that's probably near the top of the whole NFL. I realize that doesn't mean he wouldn't be able to score any type of TD or possibly pick up yardage on pass plays.
The running back and wide receiver positions almost seem like they're switching roles in the fantasy game. Matt Forte (listed as a running back the last time I checked) had better stats as a RECEIVER in today's game! Jamaal Charles had something like 50 points in a game late last year, and most of that seemed to come from receiving yards and TDs.
So, lots of rambling there, right? It's coming down to Philip Rivers and then the Bengals. A. J. Green was listed as "probable," so that scared me. I don't think he'll do any worse than Steve Smith, Sr. (34 yards plus a lost fumble) this week.
