--Previous Message--
: I just spent some time making a post on my
: FaceBook that I figured I'd share here. It
: may not be a popular view but hopefully you
: understand the reasons why I have it. :-)
Understand the reasons: Yes, since I think I you've made these arguments before.
: Here's something that may not be of popular
: opinion but that many of you already know
: and I'll explain why it is. The NFL really
: is the "No Fun League" and
: something I simply can't get into anymore.
: :-(
Somehow, I've been coming to the same conclusion. The weird part is how I've lost interest in a majority of the pro sports.
In the case of the NFL, I could point to a player like Richard Sherman. The people who defend him tend to say, "You just don't like when a Black man acts confident." Um, I know a few Black men who handle themselves well, and don't have to resort to "trash talk," so how can that be it? I'd like to think I'd be annoyed by a player of ANY "race" (we're all humans at the genetic level) who kept yapping and verbally abusing the other team.
In baseball, I wonder if it was the steroid controversy, or seeing my favorite player (Albert Pujols), who I doubt would EVER cheat, decline into a top 25 hitter, instead of an MVP candidate almost every season.
Basketball: LeBron is a decent guy, but he also did that commercial for Obamacare (no reason to get political), and I think he might care too much about his "brand," instead of championships (2-3 in the Finals overall, and in four of those series, he had an amazing team around him).
: Let's address officiating first. It's
: atrocious! You routinely see bad calls made
: on plays you saw at home even before a
: replay. Then a coach throws a challenge
: flag and they review the slow-mo. Then, and
: here's the amazing part, THEY'LL STILL GET
: IT WRONG!!! Granted it's not EVERY time but
: think about it. How many times have you
: seen the replay and, even if it's against
: your team, you realize what the call should
: be and the ref goes the other way.
Can you name an example? There was apparently a play in the NFC Championship with a clear fumble, and I think that was called wrong (but did it give an unfair advantage to either team?).
Even with the replay system, it seems like they're most interested in the how the play was called on the field. You need absolutely clear evidence to overturn the original call, or else they just stick with "the ruling on the field." In Super Bowl 40, I remember how Roethlisberger supposedly scored a rushing TD on a QB sneak, but it wasn't clear on the replay. They mainly went with the original ruling, because even the replay couldn't show you the ball breaking the plane of the goal line. Despite all of the camera angles nowadays, I have no idea how they make some of those calls on goal line runs and fumble recoveries where half a dozen players are all crowded around the ball.
: Now here's something that while I haven't
: seen it a lot, I have seen this happen. The
: ref makes a TERRIBLE call in a game... not
: just bad but TERRIBLE! The coach, during
: the post game press conference, mentions the
: bad call. What happens? The coach gets
: fined. WTF IS THAT!?!? Players are held
: accountable when they screw up. Coaches are
: held accountable when they screw up. How
: come the same can't be true for the
: officials?
How do we know if the refs have to sit out the next game or have regular performance reviews? I think the point is respecting the referees. Have you ever been one? I've only done it during a volleyball tournament, and the players rarely respect you. I'm not saying my vision is great (it's probably bad enough to where I shouldn't be calling the lines, LOL), but how do you know where that ball landed? I'm standing right next to the back line. Then they can argue with you all they want, but I didn't push back or penalize the person who got argumentative.
: As a pro it's not JUST
: about playing the game but the head games
: that go along with it.
That's something that boggles my own mind about "pro" sports in general. You're better than 99% of the people sitting in the stands, but you need to look for psychological advantages against the other players? I've never been much of an athlete, but if I was, I'd shut up and only think about outplaying the person on the other side.
: I'm not sure if they've rescinded the
: discussion about possibly wanting to do away
: with kickoffs.
I was watching a preseason game on Sunday, but can't recall if there were many kickoffs. One strange change is how the extra point after a touchdown is about twice as long (33 yards?). I heard rumors that they wanted to take THAT play out of the game, since it's so "automatic."
If they ever did make that change, I'm wondering how you'd give points to a kicker in fantasy football. The PATs that weren't even attempted still get credited to them? You only draft a kicker based on his field goal accuracy and average length (longer tends to be worth more, depending on the league rules)?
: A former player on a video
: I saw made two GREAT points about how this
: is a terrible idea. The first point was
: that playing American football is a chosen
: profession so you know there's risks
: involved. Personally, I compare it to pro
: wrestlers even though that's more of a
: performance art. The bottom line is that
: wrestlers know there are risks and they
: could possibly get seriously injured. The
: other point he made was that if they
: implemented the new rule it would,
: "turn it into a game I don't recognize
: playing."
How often were people getting hurt on the kickoffs anyway?
: Of course we ALL know about how you pretty
: much can't even touch a quarterback.
This line makes me LOL!!! If you were writing a research paper, or an academic article, you'd probably fail by invoking a blanket statement, such as "We all know ..."
: And grasping on to football has also highlighted something else for me... a game that almost never stops
Did you watch the 2010 World Cup Final? There were fouls about every three minutes!
: So, yeah, I've become MUCH more
: objective on American football since I've
: become detached from it and I almost wonder
: how I was so crazy for it in the past.
According to some definitions I looked up, "objective" would mean free from distorted emotions or personal bias. Is that what you see here? No outbursts in ALL CAPS or preference for another sport? My concept of "objective" would mean you hear about the good parts of the subject, too, rather than pointing out whatever is "wrong." So, not sure if we can agree on that part.
I mainly love the Giants. Plus, my uncle talked me into joining our family's fantasy league last season. There are eight teams, but two of my cousins sort of treat it like you draft the stars from your favorite team (the #1 overall pick was RG3). I believe I was drafting out of the #5 or #6 spot, with the "snake" rules (Number 8 makes consecutive picks, then #1 has to wait for the 16th pick, but also gets #17). I knew a little about Jamaal Charles. Who could foresee him having a better season than Adrian Peterson? I kind of lucked into a few other players. Josh Gordon was a free agent in our league. Drew Brees is a no-brainer at the QB slot. Anyway, after all of that strategy, I finished as the #1 offense (and maybe the #1 "defense," which is barely under your control) in the regular season. The playoffs came. I faced my uncle three weeks in a row (last game of the regular season, and then a two week semifinal). We blew them out, posting the highest single week score and two week score of the whole season. Then, in the "Super Bowl," it's like we turned into the Denver Broncos or something. I had the "first half" lead (there were two weeks in that round also). In week 17, only Drew Brees played extremely well. Jamaal Charles was on the bench for his NFL team (already locked into their playoff seed). I was up against guys like "Shady" the false McCoy, Cam Newton, and I forget who else. Overall, I lost by about 10-15 points.
I'm not even sure if we'll reactivate that league (my uncle is out of the country at the moment), but that would be my main reason for following the NFL this fall. It's more important for me to GRADUATE, after more than six years of college (at least at this current school - community college and technical school also consumed a bunch of time).
