Here's something that may not be of popular opinion but that many of you already know and I'll explain why it is. The NFL really is the "No Fun League" and something I simply can't get into anymore. :-( Over the last few years when I first would say this to someone they thought it was just because the Chiefs seem to be in a continual rebuilding phase. But actually it boils down to 2 main things that are practically one thing... rules and officiating.
Let's address officiating first. It's atrocious! You routinely see bad calls made on plays you saw at home even before a replay. Then a coach throws a challenge flag and they review the slow-mo. Then, and here's the amazing part, THEY'LL STILL GET IT WRONG!!! Granted it's not EVERY time but think about it. How many times have you seen the replay and, even if it's against your team, you realize what the call should be and the ref goes the other way.
Now here's something that while I haven't seen it a lot, I have seen this happen. The ref makes a TERRIBLE call in a game... not just bad but TERRIBLE! The coach, during the post game press conference, mentions the bad call. What happens? The coach gets fined. WTF IS THAT!?!? Players are held accountable when they screw up. Coaches are held accountable when they screw up. How come the same can't be true for the officials?
How about some of the rules that are actually in the books? Why, in what is a supposed "man's sport" is there a taunting penalty? I saw it just last year during a Chiefs/Broncos game. The Chiefs had the ball and there was an incomplete pass to the endzone. As the receiver and defender were starting to walk back, no contact was made but the ref threw a flag against Denver for taunting. WTF!? I'd understand if you're talking about 10-year old kids whose feelings may be more fragile and they're just mainly trying to learn skills and the game. As a pro it's not JUST about playing the game but the head games that go along with it. And if you're going to flag that situation that I mentioned, why aren't there flags thrown on every play when the teams line up? Come on... you KNOW the linemen a jawing at each other probably every play!
Then there's the excessive celebration penalty. UGH! That one DIRECTLY takes some of the fun out of it. Years ago I used to watch SportsCenter to see what Chad Johnson OchoCinco would do next. I didn't like the guy but he was always being unique and creative and his celebrations pretty much never came off as arrogant to the other team. They were just something to entertain the fans. I recall when the Chiefs were affected by this excessive celebration BS penalty. A few years ago there was a play where Dwayne Bowe caught a pass and ran for a TD. It was a 75 to 80-yard play that KC needed at that moment. Bowe ran through the endzone and jumped up to the stands. Out of pure emotion several other players ran down there and another player or two jumped up. Then the ref flags it for excessive celebration. BULLSHIT!!!
I'm not sure if they've rescinded the discussion about possibly wanting to do away with kickoffs. If you somehow haven't heard, the NFL is thinking of maybe doing away with kickoffs because players can get hurt on the play. What they'd replace it with is a "make it, take it" scenario where if you score you get the ball on your own 30 yard line with a 4th and 15 scenario that you can either try to convert or punt it away. A former player on a video I saw made two GREAT points about how this is a terrible idea. The first point was that playing American football is a chosen profession so you know there's risks involved. Personally, I compare it to pro wrestlers even though that's more of a performance art. The bottom line is that wrestlers know there are risks and they could possibly get seriously injured. The other point he made was that if they implemented the new rule it would, "turn it into a game I don't recognize playing."
Of course we ALL know about how you pretty much can't even touch a quarterback. If you're already in a tackling motion a step away and the QB throws the ball, suddenly you're "roughing the passer" even though you can't just stop on a dime. A QB is a player like everyone else. If the rules don't apply why not just go all the way and put flags on him. If you grab a flag, he's down. Hell, that's practically how it is already.
I'm just glad that I've found football (soccer) to grasp on to that seems to succeed where American football fails. Guys are allowed to do something fun when they score. There are limits but they're much more lenient than the No Fun League. And grasping on to football has also highlighted something else for me... a game that almost never stops vs a game that almost never plays. Oh, sure a lot happens on each play in American football but you generally get about 5-10 seconds of action and then nearly 40 seconds of inaction and that happens EVERY PLAY assuming there isn't a time-out, challenge, or network commercial. Ninety minutes in football takes 2 hours of real time to finish. Sixty minutes in American football takes 3 hours plus to finish. Hmmmmm. So, yeah, I've become MUCH more objective on American football since I've become detached from it and I almost wonder how I was so crazy for it in the past. I'm not condemning anyone who still loves it but I've become aware of just how overly complicated the game is and how much of it is just not that fun. :-(
As I said at the top of this post, it's not a popular view but it's not only my view but the reasons for my view. :-)
