I don;t think either Missouri or Illinois have ever experienced a net loss in population, at least according to the Census. Not that it matters, because there are so many factors to migration. Missouri doesn't have any successful examples of large cities / metros. K.C. isn't much better than StL. If StL tried to emulate Chi-Town, they did an absolutely horrific job. St. Louis is inferior in every aspect, with the sole exception of perhaps sports (which do not matter) and corruption (both are corrupt though). St. Louis has cut its throat since the 50s. It paved interstates rights over & thru cohesive neighborhoods, played host to monstrous housing projects, failed to construct a sufficient transportation system, and has allowed schools & crime to decimate any affluence that remained. St. Louis is second only to Detroit in terms of decline, and were not that much better off. Sad, really, but thats why its not uncommon for people with marketable skills to pack up and head for the coasts, where jobs were plentiful, or up north, where salaries and lifestyle are superior.
