I keep expecting the check strap to collapse the threads of the bolts I use making the assembly loose. You mentioned using a pin.
Next time I have to change a check strap I may take a 1/4" clevis pin, cut it off shorter, and drill a new hole for a cotter pin. (Not in that order). The short pin and cotter should work equally well and pass through the checkstrap seal with more clearance. The solid body of the pin would end my worries about the short bolt's threads getting "mushed".
