The noise happens any time the clutch pedal is depressed. However, I did manage to make the noise once or twice when reving the engine right after releasing the clutch pedal. Reving the engine a second time without touching the clutch pedal did NOT make the noise happen again. I'm hoping that means the bearing was resting on the diaphragm's fingers the first time.
I talked to my friend in Raleigh who is a Spitfire fan. He had two bearings in his collection, a new RHP bearing and a Japanese equivalent. He commented that the Japanese bearing was much heavier and appeared to be of better construction. He offered either/both to me but I'd feel guilty emptying his stash of spares.
I found a U.K. seller on eBay who may have the Japanese bearing. I have made some inquiries with them and may order from them early this week. Their price was good and my experience lately has been that shipping from the U.K. to my house has been quicker than shipping from the west coast.
I will let you know what I find out.

: Doug if the noise is just when you step
: on the clutch pedal it's almost
: certainly the release bearing.
: If it was in the layshaft bearings, it
: would make noise when the clutch is not
: depressed, ie the laygear is part of
: the "constant motion", it all
: stops when the clutch is depressed and
: everything stops turning.
: I can't help with a bearing
: recommendation, I don't know what is
: currently on the market for the
: spit/GT6, but the bearing quality has
: been a major issue with the big TRs for
: a looong time...
