When we put our '67 GT6 back on the road (20+ years ago) scale and rust from inside the tank kept plugging fuel filters. That went on for months and I was convinced I would have to get the tank out to clean it. That never happened because I could not see how to lever it free from under the crossbrace. My plan was that IF the scale didn't stop and I needed to remove the tank I would cut the crossbrace at both ends and make brackets to allow me to bolt it back in place. It sounds like your '72 either had that in place from the factory or perhaps a previous owner modified it. Regardless, I'm glad to know that making the brace removable is a viable option. On the other hand, the scale hasn't been a problem for several years now (knock on wood !)
