So a bit of care with the dummy layshaft can make your life a bit easier, by keeping the rollers in place, instead of dropping into the gearcase. This lets you get the laygear with needeles out onto your bench, where it's far easier to deal with them.
Like so:
Use something that's nearly the same diameter as the layshaft. ISTR that 1/2" rigid copper tubing fits the bill, but a wooden dowel could serve. Cut it's length to be just a bit shorter than the distance between the gearcase inner surfaces. Not a critical dimension, ISTR the needles are about 1/2" long.
Hope that helps,
Carter

: Jim remove the front and tail housings
: and, using a shortened
: "dummy" layshaft, push the
: layshaft out of the case. This will let
: the laygear drop to the bottom of the
: case and the first motion will then
: clear the constant laygear and will
: slide out the front.
