From the diagram, and your explanation, I take it then that:
1. Once the layshaft gears fall away from the mainshaft (and input shaft gear), the input shaft should just slide out the front.
2. It seems as if the only thing holding the input shaft into the case (and onto the mainshaft) is the input shaft bearing's external snapring being squeezed between the case and bell housing. (This is not a press-fit?)
Am I getting warm? As usual, I'm away from the project and do all the planning with just pictures, diagrams and lots of beer.

: Jim remove the front and tail housings
: and, using a shortened
: "dummy" layshaft, push the
: layshaft out of the case. This will let
: the laygear drop to the bottom of the
: case and the first motion will then
: clear the constant laygear and will
: slide out the front.

: Well, this is a little in advance of
: "the operation", but I could
: use some advice on how to get the input
: shaft out of the gear box.
:
: I obviously don't have a Churchill
: Tool, but we've all taken these LBCs
: apart without special tools. So I'm
: sure some combination of rubber bands
: and sledge hammers will get the job
: done.
