    Hi Jules, I wanted to clarify when you say anesthesia assistant are you referring to an Anesthesia Technician or an Anesthetist, AA (Anesthesiologist Assistant)?

    Actually an anesthesia assistant is and/or refer to as an anesthesia technician in different states, I notice on the east coast where AA's (Anesthetists) are employed they are refer to as anesthesia assistants that word needs to stop.

    Why? It's confusion among both professions fact that an AA-C holds a Masters of Science and/or a Medical Degree in Anesthesiology vs. an AT who holds either a certification, diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree and/or on the job/in-house education training as an AT/CER.AT.and CER.ATT which is very good.

    Which is an excellent stepping stone in becoming a medical anesthetist as an AA-C, being an anesthesia technician or anesthesia technologist with several years of technicial and clinical skills in the ACT.

    I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A LITTLE HISTORY WITH YOU AND ALL OTHERS WHO ARE UNAWARE OF THE REAL TERM OF ANESTHESIOLOGIST ASSISTANTS (MEDICAL ANESTHETIST).

    During the mid-1960s in response to a manpower shortage (Anesthesiologists, M.D.& Nurse Anesthetists) and concerns over the increasing complexity of anesthesia and surgery.

    J.S. Gravenstein, M.D., John E. Steinhaus, M.D. and Perry P. Volpitto, M.D. Anesthesiologists created the concept of anesthesiologist assistant (anesthetist). They designed an educational program whereby matriculants would build on an undergraduate premedical education then obtain a masters degree in anesthesiology. (meaning you can go from AA-C practice to M.D. to M.D.A. practice).

    Since its beginning, the Emory University School of Medicine AA Program sought to produce a new type of anesthetist, the "Anesthesiologist Assistant" (Medical Anesthetist), whose clinical and technological skills complement the traditional medical role of the "Anesthesiologist, M.D." .

    This new type of anesthetist has advanced the quality and efficiency of care delivered by the anesthesia care team model.

    The current program graduates approximately 30 anesthesiologist assistants (anesthetist) each year. Approximately ten percent (10%) of the programs graduates have entered medical school, and of those, over ninety percent (90%) have completed residencies in anesthesiology. Approximately two percent (2%)of graduates have pursued graduate school in the basic sciences, dental school, or law school.

    Once again the real word is;

    ANESTHESIOLOGIST ASSISTANT A.A./A.A.-C./RN,A.A.-C. (Medical Anesthetist).

    They are physician extenders anesthetist (Medical) mid-level provider in the ACT model.
