Hi I have to agree with MRW having clinical experience means direct patient contact. I would advise you to do a part time/volunteer job as an EMT or part time/volunteer job as an A.T. (Anesthesia Technician) working in the O.R. and off site dealing with anesthesia.

Check out ASATT (The American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians), as an A.T., Cert. A.T. or Cert. A.T.T. depending on what state and hospital you live and work in A.T.s can do a lot in their field. Example:

    1. Start I.V.s.

    2. Start Arterial lines.

    3. Operate Intro Aortic Balloon Pump Machine(IABP).

    4. Operate Cell Saver Machine.

    5. Check Blood Products Out and Hang Blood Products under the supervision of a Physician MDA or DOA.

    6. Draw and Push Meds under the supervision of a Physician MDA or DOA.

    7. Operate Level One Auto Rapid Transfusion Machine (high volume).

    8. Operate F.M.S. Auto Rapid Transfusion Machine (high volume).

    9. Hang other Fluids such as N.S. (Normal Saline), L.R. (Lactated Ringer), Albumin, Tham, Hex-tend etc.

    10. Obtaining BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) ACLS (Advance Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advance Life Support) certification as an A.T./Cer. A.T. or Cer.A.T.T.

    11. Learn the Anesthesia Machine, Operate, In Service/Teach other staff members such as A.T.s, Medical students, New Resident CA-1s, & Anesthetists AA-Cs/CRNAs.

    12. Learn and Assist in Difficulty Airway Intubation.

It's an excellent pathway in becoming an anesthetist AA-C or CRNA in the ACT. Also check out the Cer.A.T. exam and Cer.A.T.T. what they have to know. EMT is also an excellent pathway a with extensive clinical and critical care. I hope I have helped you in some way I wish you the best in AA-C or CRNA school.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!*!*!* to you and best wishes in 2009
