Keep in mind guys that every state is different on what Anesthesia Technicians and Technologists can and cannot do in the ACT even though most of our skills is in our scope of practice. A.T.s, Cer.A.T.s, & Cer.A.T.T.s have a lot more autonomy working at a Veterans Affairs Hospital (VHA) for example A.T.s are part of the 38 Hybrid occupation of Medical Instrument Technicians, Series 0649 (MITs).

Anesthesia Technicians perform logistical and technical support to Anesthesiologist, Nurse Anesthetists and Physician extender Anesthetists (AA-Cs). They maintain anesthesiology supplies and equipment, set-up anesthetizing locations and operate, monitor, and collect data from anesthesia related equipment. In some cases Anesthesia Technicians will perform clinical laboratory functions, equipment preventive maintenance/repair, and specialized cardiac procedures such as cardiac output measurement, intra-aortic balloon pumping, vessel cannulation, and auto transfusion services.

Level GS-8 Assignment. This represents the full performance level. The anesthesia technician at this level assists anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, physician extender anesthetists (AA-Cs)in difficult anesthetic procedures "under minimal supervision." The technician will connect and operate invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment (e.g., arterial pressure monitors), anesthesia machines, ventilators, intubation bronchoscopes, and ultrasonic scanning devices. "Technicians prepare and administer medications as directed by the attending physician." They (meaning A.T.s) mentor and train lower graded technicians, "nurses", "medical students", and "anesthesia residents" on anesthesia technology procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. The "technician will exercise a high degree of independent judgment in anesthesia technology duties.

CERTIFICATION. Anesthesia Technician certification through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification are also desirable for employees at this level.

ASSIGNMENT. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

In conclusion A.T.s plays a big role in the ACT in my opinion the AAAA need to embrace the A.T.s and ASATT in the same manner as the AANA.

The AAAA must help ASATT become license and set new standards in becoming an anesthetist AA-C as Allied Healthcare Profession. It should be in the same manner as a nurse they must have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) and license as nurse with ACLS and/or PALS when applying to CRNA school.

Example #1.A.T.s must have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Health/Science (BSH) 1-2 years experience in O.R. setting and all other anesthesia specialty as a license technician with ACLS and/or PALS when applying to AA-C school.

#2.A.T.s must have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Anesthesia/Technology (BSA) 1-2 years experience in O.R. setting and all other anesthesia specialty as a license technician with ACLS and/or PALS when applying to AA-C school.

#3.A.T.s must have a BSH or BSA with 1-2 years experience in O.R. setting and all other anesthesia specialty as a Cer.A.T. or Cer.A.T.T.with ACLS and/or PALS when applying to AA-C school.

#4.A.T.s must have a Bachelor's of Science degree (B.S.) in Chemistry, Biology, Health/Science, Anesthesia/Technology, Pulmonary, Physics, Biological/Science, Healthcare/Mangament, Administration (B.A.) etc. with 1-2 years experience in O.R. setting and all other anesthesia specialty as a Cer.A.T. or Cer.A.T.T. with ACLS and/or PALS when applying to AA-C school.

If you guys are applying to AA-C program with in the next 1-2 years I would apply to become an A.T. get all the knowledge I can get including my ASATT certification if possible you have to work a full 2 years in order to take the National Exam Certification, ACLS, and/or PALS, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump, Cell Saver, Anesthetsia Machine instructor Certified etc.

I assure you with having all these credentials under your belt (clinical and technical skills) and the signatures of the MDAs, DOAs, AA-Cs, and CRNAs with an out standing letter of recomendation to get into AA-C school I can't see them truning you down from the program.

I hope I have helped you guys and other people as well you can also go to the ASATT web site by typing in www.ASATT.org or go to Google/Yahoo and type in ASATT. Check out our meeting in Orlando, Florida this year October 16-19, 2008.

Good luck to all of you in AA-C school
