    Anesthesia is one of those services that is called "price inelastic" meaning the work comes in regardless of price. Unfortunately that means for a certain amount of work, the price can just as well go down as up. Medicare, Medicaid and the insurance companies figured this out and are cutting payments. So rather than expecting an increase in income in the coming years, those of us in anesthesia are greatly concerned we will see a cut in income.

    Dentists (and vets) avoided the trap and they expect to be paid what they billed. In fact, many expect you to pay them before you leave the office and do not resort to billing. If they want more money, they can either raise their rates, do more work or go into a speciality with higher pay.

    While I am all for more AAs, if you are thinking money is the most important factor in a career choice, then I would have to say dentistry would more meet your desires.
