Anesthesiologist here, I really look forward to the rise of the AA and will do all I can to support them. Currently I work with crnas and quite frankly am frightened by what I see. Anything outside of the cookbook of anesthesia is completely over their heads. Having the nursing background there is only minimal, if any, incorporation of the pathophysiology of the patient or optimal anesthetic planning and perioperative care of the patient. Heaven forbid there actually be a complication they would be forced to deal with. Even more frightening is the inborne refusal to consult the guy who actually went to medical school, all out of fear of actually admitting they are over their heads. Countless are the times I have had to clean up the mess a crna has made because of animosity the aana have programmed them to have toward MDs. Heck yeah, I want the mid-level provider that will actually practice within their capabilities!
