I've sat at a table by myself and a lunch counter as well. Usually, I'd take out a book as I waited to be served. I've even gone to the movies by myself. That way I wouldn't have to have someone next to me saying things like, what'd they say? or Why'd they do that? or do you want anything from the snack bar? etc.
