Growing up, only my dad was a reader. Mom would read movie magazines. We didn't live near a library and were never given books for gifts. My grade school and junior high had libraries and I'd check out books from there.
My oldest brother was a reader, and he'd get science fiction paperback short stories, and I'd sneak them to read. I developed my love of sci-fi from him. My other two brothers weren't readers.
My dad did pick up a Louisa Alcott book called Flower Fables from a swap meet when I was about 3. I drew pictures in the blank pages. I ended up reading the whole thing when I was in grade school. Those stories were all about fairies, imps and goblins who lived among the flowers and Fawna.
I let Rene' read it when she was in grade school, and she loved it like I did. She has it now.
