...driving in a car before there was turn signals?

My mom would tell us kids to cover up, she had to make a turn.
She rolled down the window and stuck her arm outside...straight out for a left and arm up for a right turn.
We lived in snow, so winters were rough to make turns w/her _. It sucked all the heat out of the car.
