to stay warm in the cooler weather by wearing sweatshirts or sweaters?

I have a bunch of both...I love sweatshirts but usually living in CA, the heat prevails in the afternoon and I need to wear something cooler.

Sliding on/off a sweater is easier, or I have several shawls I slide on/off all day too.
