Flo if your only income is SS, you don't get dividends or earned interest on savings accounts and your income is below I think $24,000 or $25,000, then you don't have to file income taxes BUT have you always filed a joint return, then your combine income has to be under $35,000 and again that includes and other source of income besides SS.

My SS is under $24,000 so I don't have to file income taxes but Wis has a thing called a Homestead credit which is given to renters and farmers under a certain income, so I'll be filing for that and it should give me around $500 back so you'll want to get hold of a CPA or check to see if your county has free income tax counciling because there's a chance that if your house is in both of your names, that you might qualify for some tax relief deductions in your state, which would give you some money back.
