Becky I had a client that had 2 of the standalone air conditioners in their house, one upstairs and one downstairs and they did a terrific job of cooling most of their house but the one thing that isn't mentioned about them is that they have to run 24/7 because otherwise the water that is taken out of the air will start overflowing in the very small swallow water tray inside the air conditioner.

You can get around running it 24/7 by setting it up on a sturdy box, put a container behind it and then hook up a drip hose to the water tray overflow valve which is normally located about an inch up from the bottom of the backside of the air conditioner, then just make sure you empty that container.

My clients ran theirs 24/7 and only had a problem with one of them over flowing once due to one of their cats jumping up on it and managed to change the settings so that it wasn't using the extracted water to help cool the room, which also helps evaporate the water in the water tray.
