POTTAGE)
This recipe is thick and satisfying. It is based on Medieval cookery.
This is a way to get good nutrition. It has protein by combining legumes (split peas) with cereal (oats) plus miso is from soya beans. It has green, orange and white vegetables. It has carbohydrates (oats, peas and carrots). It has an international flavor with the miso and fish sauce. Definitely a hit. It's very easy to make. You could use regular soup stock in place of the miso sauce and fish sauce if you prefer.
1/2 cup dried green split peas
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1/2 onion, chopped
1/4 cup oatmeal
1 tbsp. miso paste
2 cups water
1/4 tsp. fish sauce (optional)
Put all ingredients into a slow cooker (Crock-Pot) and cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours. Blend using an immersion blender.
Fill soup bowls or soup mugs. Can top the soup with home-made croutons (fried little squares of bread).
Enjoy!
