VW Golf 1.6 TDi CAYC 2009 - Overheats when driven - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2009
Engine Size and Code *: 1.6TDI CAYC
( Optional ) Scanner Used: VAG-COM SOLUS
( Optional) Fault Codes: none stored

Hi we have this golf in with us which over heats when driven, When car is in workshop temperature is at 90 degrees but hoses don't seem to be very hot, Take car up road and temperature gauge goes up to 120-130 degrees and when you come back there seems a lot of pressure when cap released.We thought typical water pump propeller broken up so stripped it and pump was ok. we fitted a new pump and belt kit also replaced thermostat but exactly the same,seems like a massive air lock / headgasket ? any advice would be gratefull.

Hello Paul,
Only a stab in the dark

But does this engine have a plastic thermostat housing ?
If so check it hasn't broken internally and the stat plunger has nothing to push against

Have you done a block test for combustion ingress?Could be a failed/perished egr cooler.

When driven hard (ie turbo ha s been used) and it cools down is the coolant level low ?

Head gasket would be my first port of call.

Massive air lock ?use a tool to suck it dry with vacuum and refill.

Hi, we have a very similar issue with a 2013 Audi 2.0 TDI. The coolant level keeps dropping but only slight residue around the coolant resovoir. I'm investigating the electric coolant pump.
Not sure whether yours has one as well?

FIXED.We rigged up a adapter so we could take the car for a good run with our head gasket fluid connected and after driving it for a while the fluid had changed colour so we have the task of removing head.We removed head and sent it off to be tested and skimmed if required, refitted using all new gaskets etc and have been driving it for a few days back and forward to work and all ok now.Thanks for advice Paul
