Audi A3 2.0 BWA 2006 - Camshaft failure #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006
Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 BWA

Hi,
We fitted a timing belt kit and water pump on this and it broke down 2 weeks later and was found to have a broken camshaft!
Anybody had this problem before ?
After stripping engine down there is no evidence of oil starvation or any over reason for this.
Customers wants us to pay for the repair as a bloke down the pub told him the cam belt was fitted to tight! My mechanic is adamant he lined up the marker on tensioner!
Any comments please ?

Yes,pay for it and move on if you go to court you will get shafted.its a numbers game.

A few months ago I had a 55 plate corsa 1200 (4cyl)with a misfire, exhaust camshaft broken between cyl 3 and 4. This hadn't had any engine work prior to failure. No cause was found and it has been Ok over the 6,000 miles since replacement.

Sometimes I just think shit happens and owners will want to try and blaim anybody.

I can't see how what you have done can have anything to do with the camshaft failure unless the belt fails.

Morning,
Sorry people I put this in wrong section it's a 2.0l petrol !
Tony the cam didn't seize just snap by the cambelt pulley and the t.belt was in tacked.

Its obvious the customer is trying it on.
Personally I would go for a deal to start with
Ie customer pays for the parts and you do the labour, with no admitting on liability.
If he digs his heels in tell him that you are going to get an independent forensic inspection done by a qualified engineer.
If the outcome proves you are not responsible he will be also required to pay for the inspection.
See how confident he is when faced with that.
You can also use this if it goes to court.
Only worth doing this if the car has a value of course.

I always back my staff 100% and always look for a way out of a problem, but if the cam has snapped right near that sprocket, it suggests to me it's been stressed by the removal/installation of the sprocket bolt by use of an air gun.

I've had it a couple of times - torque wrench all the way now.

Suck it up and move on I say

I don't think the cam pulley or the bolt has to be touched on these, does it?

Hi,
Where the cam snapped it wore away the cam journal so it needed a replacement head which is like rocking horse s++t. Found one from Ivor Searl recon for £1500 . The customer agreed to pay for parts and we do labour but when we finished job he changed his mind and said he'll take us to court !

Having had a similar drama a couple of years ago with a PD BKD that pulled tensioner stud, do not bother trying to do a head repair, get a second hand engine, as others have said if this job goes into court,you will lose, courts hate the motor trade and 9 times out of 10 will find in favour of complainant, or bang a claim in on your traders insurance, but that will load your premiums, I suppose it depends on relationship you have with this punter , so what do you plan to do to sort this?

I don't have much choice but to cover the whole bill!
If he starts spreading gossip around the local time it will hurt me more then the £2500 bill.
