Mitsubishi Shogun DI-D 2003 - Excessive smoke, low power, codes 12, 46, 51 - Unresolved #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003 (I think, personal plate)
Engine Size and Code *: 4M41
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Multiscan
( Optional) Fault Codes: 12, 46, 51

This is low on power with a great deal of white smoke.
Codes are:-
12 boost pressure sensor, present.
46 Injection adjust valve, present.
51 EGR position sensor, present.
The EGR valve was being driven hard open and the motor was incredibly hot. I closed the EGR by hand and left it disconnected. In this state the engine black smokes.(unless of course the valve is pressed to close, something for me to check)
When the fault occurred the tachometer stopped at the same time.
I would be suspicious of water ingress in the ECU connector or similar but getting the ECU out is many hours of work because it is in the A-pillar behind a security cover.
The loss of tacho made me think of lost rpm sensor signal in the pump but there are no codes relating to that.
Corroded filler neck and fuel pipes is a known problem causing pump contamination but why this would affect the tachometer is difficult to imagine.

I suspect it is a slightly later model if it has an electrically driven EGR valve.

By the sounds of the fault codes and the EGR valve being held open, I would check the the voltages and earths to these sensors and solenoids.

There might be something earthed that shouldn't be?

As a temporary fix I closed the EGR valve manually and left it disconnected. This allowed the vehicle to be driven in a nearly normal manner. My suspicion was that the driver device for the EGR valve motor was faulty. Unfortunately removal of the ECU is particularly difficult in this model being at the base of the A-pillar and behind security covers.The customer did not want to continue with further investigation and took it as it was. They told me they would rather spend the money on another vehicle as this was has always been troublesome.
