Mercedes Sprinter 2.2 2007 - Lots of white smoke at idle and light revs - Unresolved #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.2 OM646.985
( Optional ) Scanner Used: xentry
( Optional) Fault Codes: na

Don't normally struggle with faults like this, but been having a look at this today, lots of white unburnt fuel smoke from exhaust, no fault codes and all live data looks good, apart from maf, actual is 540mg/s and it says should be 260 to 370, but if I'm calculating properly I would expect to see 540 ish?

It has just had a recon engine as the original bottom end went, and apparantly was suffering the same white smoke problem before.

I normally put this down to low combustion temperature and fuel is passing through and out the exhaust.

I've checked as much as i can with xentry and can't see any problems, starts and runs fine.

Anybody got any pointers?

Hi.
Have you checked EGR operation.
The air mass would be around 540 without EGR (as in blanked off or not opening).

Egr is working fine, confirmed in actuator tests, and took it out to double check, that was my first thoughts.

Injectors are original too, double checked the codes.

Hi

Injector faults are known to cause haze / smoke at idle on sprinters, (may be worth a search as feel it has come up here before).

May also be worth double checking injector washer thickness as wrong cylinder protrusion can give similar issues

Yeah I've heard about injector problems, xentry also lists it as a possibility too and there is a procedure for checking the values, I just can't get my head round it, it gives min and max values for specific ranges, but I don't know how much would be bad and cause this issue. Will take another look tomorrow and post the info, see if anyone can explain it.

I kinda ruled out compression or injector seals, as the customer said it was same with the original lump, it does point to injectors but I would like to prove it first.

Customer wanted his van back so didn't get to do anymore tests. Don't think I will see it again either.

Could it have had a non genuine exhaust/DPF or been remapped for DPF off. ?
