BMW 320D 4D1 2001 - Intermittant poor cold start #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Size and Code *: 2000 4D1
( Optional) Fault Codes: none

As description some times turns over & no start!as if "re-bleeding" hp system,this bosch rotary pump VP44
trying to ensure in tank pump is good,however no data available, it seems weak & will only provide 8psi when blanked off
could anyone confirm the correct output/flow rate.

Don't forget the fuel pump relay can also give intermittent starting problems. So if you do renew the electric fuel pump I would also renew the relay as well.

If you do a bit of research I think you will find that the VP44 is meant to draw fuel from the tank & that your in-tank pump is there for different resons.

What codes do you have in the PSG 5 unit?

tell me what other reason would an in tank pump be fitted other than priming the system,the inlet on the in tank pump is directly from the bottom of tank & the outlet is directly to the filter housing.
ive fitted a vac / pressure gauge to the leak off pipes & ive found whilst running i actually get 7 psi at the leak off? which is pupm pressure , then after a 20 minute rest im seeing a small vacum at the leak off ?
also whilst running there is no leak off from either of the injectors.
we are so used to massive leak off rates with common rail systems this seems unusual, your thoughts!

If you look the tank goes up and over the prop-shaft and is referred to as a saddle tank, How does the fuel get from one side to the other ?

Probably to do with the saddle tank arrangement like the set up on Rover 75's.
But I could be wrong
