Ford Focus 1.8 TDcI 2004 - Poor running, multiple faults, buzzing noise from injectors #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Size and Code *: 1.8 TDcI 115 HP
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Multiscan

Multiple faults (Having to go through them one at a time so this is, for now, a specific question about a specific symptom) Car belongs to a competent friend so I am not working on it directly

On starting initially runs reasonably smoothly but as time goes on it becomes a bit raggard at idle. At the same time an intermittent Buzzing sound comes from the injectors (very much like old style morse code from a Titanic era transmitter).

I have established that there appears to be multiple extra high frequency pulses to the injectors and I am satisfied that this is causing the noise.

As a guess (!) I have suggested removing and checking the crank sensor/sensor teeth for swarf build up.

Is there anything else that anybody might be able to think of that might cause this symptom??

Hi

I understand the ECU will pulse the injectors in this manner to reduce rail pressure.

Is this as a response to a possible fault condition or part of normal operation?

(At first thought seems a bit bizarre introducing extra fuel at irregular parts of the fueling cycle as part of normal operation

)

I am getting faults for low fuel pressure but have not been able to "Catch it in the Act". There is no evidence of metel fileings/Crap in the fuel filter. Owner is tepted to try fitting a new pressure regulator but it is quite expensive and I am wanting to eliminate less expensive possibilities before going down that route.

Whats wrong with testing it before replacing it?

Last time I looked you can not fix a vehicle based on the cost of the part.

Test and prove it !!

Both I believe, I am not that familiar with the focus, but think it will have a IMV rather than a pressure regulator. So excess pressure in the rail( produced by error or after switch off) needs to be bleed off.

The high frequency pulse on the injector bleeds the pressure of via the leak off without opening the injector to cylinder.

You may get more help if you post the bigger picture of faults / tests / symptoms etc. I think.

I am sure Mark will advise on method of testing the IMV / pressure regulator If you take on board his comments.

I will second that, a bit of live data would would be good, first when running well and then when at fault.

I will help where possible but common rail can be lethal in the wrong hands.

A ten minute google search on Delphi common rail pressure control may not be a waste of time either.

You will also here this "buzzing" noise (approx 3 times) each time you switch one of these Delphi CRD cars off.

On a healthy car.
