Mitsubishi L200 2.5 2003 - Will not rev after head gasket replacement #

Hi all
Got the above vehicle in at the moment from another garage who have replaced the headgasket because the engine kept overheating,

The car idle badly and has really bad White smoke (overfuelling) first thing I checked was egr and wastegate solenoid pipeworks as I have seen people put them on wrong but they are all ok.

After this I checked the timing which is also ok so after this I thought I would start with the basics and first thing that came to me was blocked exhaust. I removed the pipe from the egr cooler to the valve and it revved up nicely (although chucking out lots of smoke).

Then I unbolted exhaust from the turbo so the whole exhaust was disconnected and to my amasment it wouldn't rev again.

I feel that the turbo is causing the fault as I have blanked off the egr valve and with disconnected vac pipe to wastegate it still does the same thing. Also if I take the boost pipe off the turbo is boosting hard onto my hand just at idle.

As I have never come across this fault with a turbo before just wondered if any of you guys have seen it or have any other tests I could carry out.

Hi Carl

Restricted inlet ? Rag / foreign body dropped system ?

Any fault codes ? Live data e.g boost pressure?

Don't forget basics on fuel, contamination/ air ingress / flow cheers Aidan

Hi Aidan,

Thanks for your reply fuel flow is good and fresh fuel and filter have been put in by the garage that presented the car.

As I know the turbo is actually boosting i am starting to think that they have maybe dropped something into the exhaust manifold, as removing the egr pipe is just letting it exhaust.

Fault codes are 4520 VGT CONT PRES
It does clear but comes back afeter a couple of attempts to run. Boost pressure when the fault present is 118kpa

Oh dear seems to be something missing from the turbo

Garage are going to drop control ring round but think damage has been done as all the veins are solid

.

The control ring which connects wastegate arm to the veins is missing don't know why they even took that part of the turbo off. Have explained to them that this now needs to be rectified before I can go any further

I'm obviously being thick but what is funny this car is not my job and I have found a part of the turbo missing which is now in my possesoin garage who did the headgasket said they found the cog on the subframe but didn't know what it was for.

I'm sorry if you didn't see the funny side Carl, I certainly wasn't taking the p*ss out of you. The garage that did the head gasket have messed up big time and it is their responsibility. I don't know what your relationship is like with them but you have done the diagnosis and it is up to them to put it right or pay you to do it. Let them lose the sleep as it's not your problem.
