Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D 2004 - Black smoke problems, code P1251 turbo stepper motor #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Size and Code *: 2 Ltr 1AD - FTV
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Carmen Scan
( Optional) Fault Codes: P 1251

Have a Toyota Avensis D4D 2Ltr diesel in garage with black smoke problems, checked fuel system & turbo, ok. Inlet manifold dirty, cleaned out, much better but no power, light on dash, 1 fault P1251 (turbo stepper motor). Cleared fault but came back again. What is turbo 'turbo stepper motor'? Thought the turbo pressure might be too high and the waste gate / variable adjuster in turbo sticking like the vw turbos. J C

Hi John,
Very first thought when I read your post...
Sticking EGR valve.
I had an Avensis with low performance, smoking and shunting about two months ago, cleaned out the EGR valve, problem sorted. Met the owner again on Monday for a problem with a different vehicle and it's still going fine apparently. The thing we noticed at the time was that with the MAF disconnected the vehicle performed much better. Presumably with a MAF code logged the system stopped applying any EGR. On this basis the customer asked me to fit a new MAF. It was after this I found the EGR fault so I now have a known good MAF for testing purposes

Thanks Shaun, Cleared fault code P 1251. gave car back to customer and asked him to arrange a suitable date to return car to garage, but no word yet. Regards John
