Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 Di 2002 - Non starter - Fixed

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Size and Code *: 3.2 di-d
( Optional) Fault Codes: 12 intake manifold pressure, 48 pressure reg valve

hi folks, towed in this vehicle the other day as a non-starter. Customer said vehicle ran lumpy then cut out and would not start. The vehicle will tow off but only run to a max of 2000rpm with thottle hard down release throttle and it stalls.We replaced fuel filter and noticed some deposits of water in the bottom, so drained tank but fuel in tank was clean. I have put fresh fuel and a fuel cleaner in it but fault still the same. Iam suspecting fuel pump fault but would welcome any advise before fitting a new one as they are rather expensive. I have plugged 2 diagnostic machines in it and codes are listed above thanks neil..

As a starter I would be thinking along the lines of an egr fault/ blocked exhaust, going by your fault codes it looks like it's lost manifold pressure or excessive pressure.

Is there much smoke when it runs?

Hi Neil. If the codes do not clear I think it wise to concentrate on that. To rule out the fuel pump could you not check fuel pressure.

Hope its not the pump they are VERY expensive and not very easy to fit.
I will do some checking on my info on these for you.

Test the fuel pressure ? i assume you think it,s common rail ?

Hi Knew it was not common rail but assumed that it had a fuel pump to lift fuel to injector pump. Still feel trouble codes hold the answer.

No lift pump, has hand primer on filter housing.Codes may hold the answer, but it normally takes a big problem for these to non start.

How well do you know the customer !!! ie could he be telling porkies about how it stopped working ??

Neil. Do you think the injector pump is not lifting fuel from tank or not delivering fuel to injectors? How full is the fuel filter when removed? If filter only half full why not by-pass filter and fit a bleeding bulb. Get someone to work bulb while you try and start. If this does the trick and no air getting into fuel system you could fit a electric pump in-line. Done this many times to mondeo's,escort's etc with good success.HTH

hi les, there does not appear to be any fuel at the injectors when winding cant really check fuel pressure its not common rail. thanks neil.

hi kev, thanks mate yeh as you say it aint common rail and yes i have found out they are rather expensive prob end up down the dreaded second hand route! any info would be helpfull cheers neil..

hi les, fuel filter brim full and it makes no difference if you prime it. Iam convinced its short on pump pressure due to ingress of water thanks neil..

hi, just been looking at the fuel pump does anyone know which sensor if any on the outside of the pump regulates the fuel pressure thanks again neil..

give my friend richard a ring at j wright and sons. tell him you know sean at springwell motors,explain your problems. they strip and re-con pumps and injectors and know there stuff i am sure he will give you some friendly advice. 01924 840336

Hi folks Fitted a second hand fuel pump this afternoon and problem solved, vehicle up and running again. Many thanks for your advice neil
